You Can’t Build a HUGE Network Marketing Organization Online!

Can you build a HUGE network marketing organization only using online methods and strategies like Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and etc…? NO!

Why is that you ask? Well it wouldn’t be much of an article if that was the only answer. So let’s go a little further and I’ll explain why I said “NO!”

I see and hear it all over the place. “Old School Marketing Methods Don’t Work Anymore!” Waa, Waa, Waa.  Actually, I bought into these beliefs myself awhile back. It is true that nobody really wants to make a list of their Friends and Family but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t work. The truth is, it works and people are still making a ton of money using these methods. As a percentage of people in these businesses, more are still making larger sums of money using Old School methods vs. marketing online. Let me explain.

If you asked me last year if old school network marketing methods still worked in the industry my answer would definitely have been, NO! However, with all the information we have bombarding us today people have become more informed of scams and illegal programs. In short, everyone is a hundred times more skeptical now than anytime before. That being the case, we need to get in front of people building relationships in order to build something huge. Plus, you need to make the method so simple that ANYONE can do it.

Online marketing is a great way to build leads but, it is very difficult to build trusting relationships. Old school methods on the other hand are more about face-to-face which makes it easier to build trust & value. A person that trusts you is much more likely to join your business rather than wondering if they are falling for another online scam.

Now let us look at the way to building an organization that will take you to the TOP! Like I mentioned before, online marketing is great for building leads but not a huge organization. The reason is, most people will not take the time to do what is required to be successful online. Online marketing requires knowledge and strategies using social media e.g., Blogs, Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and etc… How many people do you know that will take the time to properly implement these strategies? The answer: not that many PERIOD Now watch the video below and I’ll explain.

For most people, online marketing is intimidating, requires knowledge and is very time consuming. Where do I start? What works best? Nobody is visiting my site? & etc, etc… That being the case, most people will quit your business even quicker online vs. old school methods. In other words, online marketing methods are very difficult to duplicate. Do you really think that Aunt Martha is going to build a big online business?

Now let’s take a look at Old School Methods. I get Aunt Martha in my business and tell her all I want you to do is share this DVD or Brochure with everyone you see. I know the old “3 foot rule.” But hold on, do you think Aunt Martha or the nice man down the street can do that? You bet they can!!! This is why Old School can build you a huge business. Online methods build leads. Old School methods build organizations! In other words, “It ’s so simple even a Cave Man can do it.” Sorry about that one but it just seemed to fit.

Most people are not willing to do what it takes to be successful online. Old School methods provide simple tried and true strategies that have worked for years and will continue to grow. Just call me Dumb DVD Dave and all I do is share the DVD’s. That all I do. I share the story of my opportunity face-to-face but let the third party tools do the selling. Can anyone do that? Yes! Can anyone build a online empire? Yes! But the real question is, will they do what it takes? The answer to that my friend is emphatically No! No Way! Probably Not Going To Happen!

In conclusion, if you want to build a HUGE organization, you need to adopt both methods and more…

1. Online marketing to build a presence online, a reputation as being a leader in your niche market and to build leads. Implementing these and other strategies will help you build a decent size business online. After building your leads and signing some of these people up in your primary business, you will have to evaluate their skill sets and plug them in to a system. Some may be able to build leads and more online but most will become more successful using the Old School methods. Then in turn, they can teach their organization to do the same.

2. Old School methods will provide you with an opportunity to implement systems that have worked throughout the years. Having a system that is duplicatable for the average Joe is what makes this method so powerful. Utilizing third party tools, meetings and simple strategies that anyone can do will let your organization grow away from you. Those ladies and gentlemen are the key words, “an organization that can grow away from you.” This in my mind makes the old school methods still very valuable today.

So, do you want to build a nice size organization or something HUGE? It’s your decision.

To finalize, if you want that HUGE Network Marketing organization, then you had better figure out a way to implement both an online presence while utilizing Old School methods.

Let me know what you think. Leave me a comment below. Love it or Hate it. I would like to hear your thoughts!

  • Well done, Dave! I totally agree - it's never a good idea to put all our eggs in one basket. I have found that for some situations online works well, but it is not enough, just like you said.

Since I have to be myself in order to make my business work, my passion is to connect with people. Sometimes you can initially do this, but eventually you will need to make further contact in order to keep connecting. Thanks for pointing this out so well.

Keep the good stuff coming. I'm learning a lot.

  • Dave, this is an awesome blog. People need to know that the internet is a tool that should be used in conjunction with old school network marketing principles. You are right on point. We must keep it simple to truly be effective and duplicatible. Keep sharing and keep teaching.

  • Direct mail is great, and there are mailing lists out there (school databases) that are free. I would recommend a direct mail postcard campaign, try and get in some catalogs, also you might want to target colleges with education programs - the cool things they discover in their college classes (and build lesson plans around) they tend to take into their jobs as innovative ideas.

Dave - At the end of the day, no matter how you do it, networks are grounded in personal relationships and trust. You can establish those with both old school and new school tactics. It probably is true that you need a new school "air attack" today just to keep the pipeline filling as fast as possible, because it is easier for folks to get distracted and bail on you today. And the old school "ground game" is a better way to create the personal connections that keep people on your team. That is why live events are so key for online businesses. Like most everything in life, the key to long term success is massive action + balance.

    Thanks for Your efforts. Chip
  • I think that putting all of your eggs into one basket can create a huge mess when the basket falls. I think a combination is wonderful. I agree, there is nothing like the good ol' face to face. People are certainly more comfortable with someone they can look in the eyes. I am fairly new to the online business building model but I will say that it too has been a wonderful tool. I would never say that the old school methods don't work. Everything isn't for everybody as the saying goes and there are going to be those that only want to deal face to face and vice versa.
  • Hi Dave,

Online marketing is still new to me, but I've seen the power of connecting with people online. It seems like relationship building is the common factor in old school and online marketing techniques. I agree with your point that selling online is getting harder because of increased spammy practices and consumers' growing mistrust. I like the offline networking: meeting new people, developing a relationship that can grow into a partnership or client. I realize it takes a combination to build an online presence.

I appreciate your tips, Dave. You and Dawn are leading the way for those of us who are building successful and ethical businesses.

    Take care,

  • Dave,

Thanks for inviting me to visit your group, and for the opportunity of airing my thoughts on your comments. Yes i agree with you that both methods of marketing has it's place in the scheme of things.

We have heard it said so many times. There are examples of people having come online and joined some company that promised them a lot but did not deliver, half or any at all of what was promised.

Whose fault is it, what happened? did the business owners deliberately set out to trick somebody, or is it a case that the newbie just did not understand what was imparted to them so there fore they could not make a success of it,

Now after trying for a while and their goals are not achieved, these persons would naturally become a bit sceptical when some body else comes along to sell them this wonderful opportunity that is the best thing since Slice Bread,

In most instances they would have lost some money that they could not afford to, in the first place, just trying to make that big or even moderate break,

It stand to reason that these persons would become more suspicious as time went by,even to the point of passing up some really good opportunities that could give them a headstart to finally realising their dreams.

On the other hand if i know you personally Dave, and you said to me Carol this is a good program, i have been a part of it for so long and the Administrators are honest and really wants to see you progress. So you can work with them.

In that second scenario as long as i was looking for a business, or even if i wasn't ,but the fact that i know you and you are recommending this programe. Then i would certainly be more inclined to join.

Let us not forget that even though we know many persons Family and Friends included, they might not want or have the time to be bothered with maintaining a business online,
considering it's hard work and quite time consuming,

So the only people who will do it are the Marketers who are commited to it and is in for the long haul. But definately many of the experts have taught that the only way to become successful online is to combine both methods.

So Question , Who came first the Chicken or the Eggs:)

    Love Carol
  • Dave,

Great post. Even though I don't entirely agree. Certainly, the combination of offline and online marketing is golden. No disagreement there. But when you state that having a business exclusively online cannot be done, I have to disagree. It can be done and people do it all the time. It is just not for everybody. And it certainly is not as easy as some try to make it sound. It is hard work, no matter where you do your marketing.

  • Karin,

Thanks for the comment and sharing your thoughts! I appreciate and respect people who speak their mind. Like a professor once told me, if you have 10 people in a meeting and they all dress the same and all agree, you have 9 to many people in that meeting.

In regards to your statement "having a business exclusively online cannot be done, I have to disagree." I don't believe I ever stated that point. A lot of businesses have become HUGE online and I'm not disputing that at all. Now when it comes to "Network Marketing," I disagree. Because even the ones that did build HUGE organizations online in Network Marketing where smart enough to plug most of their downline in to a system of using Old School methods.

    I love debates so keep'em coming! ;)
    Dave
  • Dave,

Point well taken! You need both methods to effectively grow your business. I've been too focused on the online aspect (maybe this south paw was built backwards) to give any time to the old school forms.

Rock solid article, Dave. Time to expand the horizons and grow the offline end ...

  • Stop the pendulum! That's just it, isn't it. People are fickle and those who consistenly do well ignore the fads and plod along with what works, adding new methods but not eliminating the tried and true.

  • Amen, you are singing my song here! I have felt alone in this thinking since coming online in December ~ which I did really just to build an online presence so when people googled me they really learned about me as a leader (but turns out I'm having a blast and so impressed by the caliber of people here, so am now way more invested!) :)

Anyhow, I am an old school networker for sure. I actually wrote one of my very first blog posts on ~ old school vs. new school, is there room for both? And the answer is, YES, there is magic in combining the two! I truly believe for all the people saying old school doesn't work....and that online attraction marketing changes the game....well i'm here to say that the same principles of online attraction marketing work offline! It is never about pitching or throwing your opportunity in everyone who fogs a mirror's face....it is about positioning, posture, qualifying and building trusting relationships and community that thrives long term.

Thanks for bringing attention to a favorite topic of mine Dave & Dawn! :)

  • Dave,
This is a wonderful post my friend and is actually one of the pillars that my team operates from. Online network marketing can be incredibly effective in several areas:

    1. Upfront income generation through affiliate sales

    2. Lead generation

    3. Sourcing out interested individuals who we can build a lasting relationship with

    4. Social media branding

What it is HORRIBLE for is long term retention and building of a true network marketing organization because of the fact that every day there are more distractions (new opportunities) coming online to take you new business partner's attention away.

The remedy to this is to develop a hybrid model which takes the best of online networking along with offline marketing for what I believe to be the most effective way to build a true long term profitable and sustainable business.

Keep up the great work on your blog Dave. Your a beacon of light in the industry and I am proud to call you my friend.

    To Our Massive Success,
    John
