Are You Selling Bologna Juice?

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

First off, I want to say that this post may tick a lot of you people off PERIOD. I know it will because most of you are so emotionally involved with your product or service and what I am about to say, is going to make you upset. That’s fine. We all need a reality check once in awhile to make sure that we are headed down the right path. While this post is not intended to push you in to our business opportunity, it is intended for you to evaluate your current business and make sure you understand what it is you may be marketing.

Dawn and I got started in Network Marketing after reading some books by Donald Trump, Robert Kiyosaki and others. Unfortunately when we first started in this industry we were IGNORANCE on fire. We got caught up in all the HYPE the company was pushing and really didn’t look at it from a TRUE business professional standpoint. They dangled the Black Mercedes, the Jets, the Big Piles of Money, Vacations and of course Residual Income for the sales pitch. Guess what, we too fell for it, hook, line and I think I choked on the sinker!

I mean come on, if all these dumb, stupid people can make all this money, certainly two professionals like Dawn and I can do it too. What we realized in the end, we were actually the stupid people ourselves! We did everything according to the system just like they said to do. We bought over $4,000 of product because that is what it takes to really make this business work. We talked to everyone while following the system to a tee. We thought we were doing great and right on course since we put in over 30+ people in our business. We were sure we would be successful since a lot of the top people that were making over a million dollars a year only sponsored about that same amount. We were on the path to greatness!

The work was hard convincing people that we had the best product on the market. Plus, if they didn’t want to DIE, they had better start taking it themselves. Then in the next month or so another company came along with SUPER Juice PlUS! Weeks go by and another, then another, then capsules and by the way, you can buy about the same thing at Walmart for less than a ¼ of the price. So then you start telling people but, “You can’t make money off of buying it a Walmart and you do want to have residual income in your life, don’t you? Trust me guys, most of these companies don’t last and most of the BIG MONEY is made from the leaders in the industry that already had past downlines in other businesses.

Now I’m not saying that “some people” don’t get lucky and really do hit it big. Anyone can hit the Lotto if all your numbers hit just perfectly. But the success factor is stacked against you! Most people are not mentally at that point in their lives and don’t offer enough value.

So many network marketers out there are telling you how to become successful when they haven’t achieved success themselves. There is way to many Bologna Juices out on the market and you have to be careful not to get caught up in all the hype. What do I mean by that? Most of them are a bunch of crap because the only reason that most people buy in, is because of the Business Opportunity and it’s really not about the product. I’m not saying that most of these companies don’t have a great product, they do! I’m just saying that most people wouldn’t even that a second look at products or services unless they can make money. And that in my opinion Ladies and Gentlemen is a bunch of crappy Bologna Juice!

Be truth with yourself like Dawn and I did. Really, I mean really evaluate your opportunity and future opportunities while asking yourself, “is this product or service at fair market value?” or “Am I in this business because of the money and my future for residual income?” But what does residual income really mean, if the company goes out of business. hmmmm

The kid in this Bologna Commercial is Cute but, being emotionally attached to a bad business is a bunch of BOLOGNA!

Dave, I enjoyed listening to your bologna juice story. Looks like you've been there, done that, and lived to tell about it… not with regret (I didn't sense any)… but with renewed energy and wisdom and being able to laugh about it. I like that spirit… we dust ourselves off and get back on the network marketing road (because in principle it is a good road). But this time we know better to avoid the potholes called bologna juice that can trip us up. Life is about learning lessons, all the time. Your lesson is a good one to heed. Thanks for sharing it!

Great post! I also got sucked into some Bologna Juice companies in past years! So glad I've finally found great products that I truly believe in that are timeless :) I like this post cuz it is a great wake-up call to newbies that are looking for a new biz – it will help them take a good look at what they are getting themselves into before investing.

you mention the book 'outliers' by malcolm gladwell in this vid. one of the core beliefs gladwell emphasizes is that the mega-successful people (ie. bill gates) have actually just had 'more time in the saddle' than others in the same field. it's a great testament to stick around a company (assuming it is legitimate and fits your said criteria) rather than being a fickle MLM-er that hops around from company to company. no get-rich-quick… it pays to stay!

Great Blog Post, Over the past 20 years or so I have seen all kinds of Hype. Many of the people I know have shifted from one company to another. Few stick it out with one for more than 4 or 5 years it seems.

I found a company that I use the product and share with others. It was ALL about the product for my day to day business. Love it, Live it and Share it!

Great post Dave and Dawn. I certainly have had the thought from the outside that a lot of the products are hyped up. Your honesty certainly makes you that much more credible. I'm sure you will help many people avoid selling a product that isn't very good, which is a great service.

I call shenanigans. Not only did no one really get angry at you for posting this, I don't think you really thought anyone would. Because it's common sense.

Hey Dave, sometimes you have to step on some toes to make a point, and this point needed to be made! So much hype…from so many people…so many 'me too' products.

Bologna juice everywhere! Great video that delivers an important message.

So true Dave, I wouldn't change our experiences for the world and there are definitely no regrets. Successful people come from many failures, it's the ones that quit after a failure that never become successful!

    Thanks!

Christine, It is so true that most do not do their research but, I believe most people just get caught up in the hype of finally achieving their dreams. Then a few months later when they realize that they spent more than they have made, they quit! That's right. They don't fail at network marketing. They Quit!

    Thanks for your comment!

Hey Katana, I grabbed that metaphor from one of our regional conventions here in Orlando and thought it would make a great post.

Thanks for the comment. We really appreciate it!

Thanks Glyna, I must have done some good marketing if it stuck in your head all day. The cute little kid commercial probably helped too. lol

Thanks again and feel free to ask about our business anytime.

Dave – Great video! I think I am going to hear “bologna juice” in my head ALL DAY! Now – I have to know what awesome product you are selling that makes you so passionate:)

  17. June 3rd, 2010 at 20:48 | #17

What a great metaphor. I also tried the network marketing thing and found that it didn't work for me. The internet definitely has made network marketing obsolete- my boyfriend now helps people market online (including me) and it's way more effective than the things they wanted me to do! And network marketing rarely makes the most of people's talents and strengths. No network marketing company ever says “You're great at X, Y, and Z, so do that instead of (house parties, friends and family sales pitches). Even if it's not bologna juice it shouldn't make one feel like bologna themselves. Thank you!!

    Thanks!

Great post, and I thought, to the point. Too many of us get involved with Network Marketing opportunities without really doing research and knowing what is REALLY involved, what you can truly expect by faithfully working the business. I too have been involved with Network Marketing/Direct Sales for so long now that I've done the same as you guys, and may others, with lots of upfront money and disappointment someone down the line. Dave & Dawn, thanks for sharing this truthful info. ;-) Christine

I am waiting for Cran-Bologna juice, Dave ! LOL

  20. June 2nd, 2010 at 11:41 | #20

Darlene, Unfortunately too many people have been there and done that! When we have these fly-by-night companies coming in and telling people how they can “ALL” get rich by selling this “Bologna Juice”, it gives this wonderful industry a black eye. If I can just help one person understand, I feel that I've accomplished something here. Thanks for sharing! Dave

  21. June 2nd, 2010 at 11:34 | #21

You are right on the mark here Dave…As well the food industry also has to stop manipulating and diluting the nutrients in your food supply. We will see in this next period a huge upsurge of sustainable, buy local farm demand.

  22. June 2nd, 2010 at 11:33 | #22

No problem Edward. I'm glad you liked the post and shared you experience with me as well.

  23. June 2nd, 2010 at 11:31 | #23

The Bologna Juice really isn't that bad at first but, The After Taste is REALLY NASTY! Thanks Melodie! ;)

  24. June 2nd, 2010 at 11:26 | #24

Thanks Rebecca for sharing that insight! So many people don't realize this because they are looking directly in the headlights of that Brand New Flashy Mercedes! I've done extensive research on a lot of these companies and it's amazing what you find out if you just do your homework. Hopefully most people will find out before they become that MLM speed bump!

  25. June 2nd, 2010 at 11:18 | #25

Hey Bruce, I have plenty of that “Meat Juice” rotting in my garage if you want to buy some. Will Ya, Will Ya??? Wow! Isn't that a pretty picture. lol

I truly appreciate your comment and I'm glad you are following your heart and it's working. Let me know if I can ever help you on this journey! Dave

  26. June 2nd, 2010 at 11:13 | #26

So true Mandee and thanks for sharing your experience with us. I was telling Dawn last night after coming back from a meeting we did that some people just don't get it in this industry. When you lead with the business, it's a going out of business plan PERIOD If a person truly believes in the product first, then they'll want to do the business. We did the “buy a lot & let it rot” thing in the past too. Never again, No way!

Thanks a lot for the comment!
